Laundry Soaps

My sisters, cousins and I were talking about baby laundry soaps at my sister-in-law's baby shower on Saturday. She said that Dreft baby detergent actually took the color out of clothes that were tested for color fastness (she worked for Hannah Anderson). It kind of scared us to think about what caustic stuff must be in our baby soaps that can suck the color right out of fabric.

So, here's a couple of recipes of alternatives that I have yet to try but my friend's use and like (even on cloth diapers).

Liquid Detergent (I got this one from my friend Megan)
1/3 bar of Fels Naptha Soap, grated (in the laundry section)
Cook in 6 cups of water until soap is melted.
Add 1/2 cup Borax (in laundry section)
and 1/2 cup washing soda (not baking soda, also in laundry section)
Cook until dissolved.
Add water to make 2 gallons.

Use 1/2 cup per load.

Powdered Detergent (I got this one from my friend Emily in ND who uses it for diapers but I have since modified it to my specs) This is my favorite one!
1 bar of soap (Fels Naptha)

1 small bar of castille soap (or Ivory)

3 cups Borax

3 cups Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (not baking soda)

1/2 cup baking soda

Grate the soap.
Then pour everything into a food processor 1 cup at a time and blend until soap is in powdered form.

Use 2 Tablespoons a load (3 for the really full loads or if you have hard water).

I use this recipe for liquid detergent and it works great.
We all have sensitive skin and we have not had any problems.
However, it does not work on my husbands very dirty, greasy work clothes.
I love that the homemade detergent costs very little to make!!

I've used the powdered detergent in a few loads now, and so far I really like it. It got out blood, but not chocolate. In the detergent's defense though, I forgot to spray it before I put it in the laundry. It makes everything feel really soft too. it's a winner in my book!

Next I'm trying the weed killer.
